WESTBURY 1st XI were edged out by just six runs in a thrilling Airey Cup final against Tetsworth on Monday (25/08).
Tetsworth batted first and in the second over the league's highest scorer, Windward Island international Hyron Shallow smasahed three fours and a six to stamp his authority.

With Delroy Cyrus at the other end they put on 178 for the first wicket making the Westbury bowlers toil in the windy conditions.

The breakthrough came when skipper Tredwell's spin deceived Cyrus (88) and he was caught by Hoy. Rolando Wright took to the crease to support Shallow and between the two they moved the score on to 265 before Steve Wilkes bowled Shallow (97).

Tredwell and Wilkes started to dominate the batsmen, Wilkes taking two wickets in one over and having a good appeal for a third turned down by the umpire. Loggin weighed in with another two as Westbury contained Tetsworth to 292-8.

This looked a tall order for the Westbury batsmen especially when opener Styles was clean bowled by Romel Foster in the second over. Ed Hoy joined Ben Rae and this pairing started to frustrate Tetsworth's bowlers with some classy stroke play before Hoy (44) was run out by an accurate throw from Shallow.

While Rae was still stroking the ball around the run chase was still on. Tom Boardman (17) was caught by Burke and then Rae with three runs short of his century was bowled by Shallow with the score 165-4.

Captain Tredwell (56) then played magnificently to bring his team within reach of the target until in the 44th over he came down the wicket to hit the ball early, missed and was stumped by Burke.
Westbury needed six off the last ball to tie the scores, but Wilkes went for a big hit and was bowled by Williams, thus seeing Tetsworth victorious by six runs.

  • Westbury 1sts travelled to Horley on Saturday (23/08) and secured a seven-wicket victory which moves them to top spot in the OCA League Division One.

  • Horley batted first and finished their innings on 182 all out, Ben Rae grabbing three wickets, with Matt Smith (2-15) mopping up the last two .
In reply Westbury's Mark Styles (39) and Ed Hoy (23) put on the early runs and it was left to Rae with an unbeaten 83 to hit the winning boundary to take the full points and top spot.

  • Westbury II continued their unbeaten run in Division 8 with a six-wicket win against East and West Hendred on Saturday.

  • Michael Platts Martin was the pick of the bowlers taking 4-10, while Neil Wilkins, Ben Curley and Darren Gascoigne took two each to dismiss the opposition for 85 in 41 overs.
