AFTER defeating Middleton Cheney by 14 runs in the quarter final on Tuesday, Westbury saw themselves drawn against Cropredy in the semi final of the Peter Strong Trophy, played at Marston St Lawrence on Sunday (13/07).
Cropredy won the toss and elected to bat making 97 all out from their allocated 20 overs. Steve Wilkes did the damage bowling, taking 3 wickets for 25 runs, supported by Dan Hopkins (2-25).
Kiwi Ben Rae was the first wicket to fall with the score
on 24, but this served to spur skipper Tredwell into action as he hit 49 not out from 47 deliveries, while at the other end Tom Boardman was also undefeated on 25. Westbury scored 98-1 off of 15.1 overs and booked their place in the final.
After a 30-minute break Westbury were set to meet Horley in the final. Westbury went on to win in a nail-biting finish with the scores tied but they had lost two less wickets.
Horley batted first and set Westbury 111 to win. Stand-in captain Dave Taylor hit 31 not out and Nick Tarrant 23 as Horley were limited to 110 from their 20 overs.
Steve Wilkes was again the pick of the Westbury bowlers taking 2 for 25.
Rae and Tredwell combined well together putting on 66 for the first wicket. Tredwell then took control, stroking the ball through the gaps and scoring 37 before he was run out with the score on 100.
Big-hitting Tom Boardman was superbly caught by Shortt and it was left to his younger brother Simon and Steve Wilkes to see Westbury to the title for the first time with a single from the last ball.
Skipper Tredwell was presented with the Man of The Match Award as well as the Peter Strong Trophy.
On Friday (18/07) Westbury aim to take their second trophy of the season, when they face Cropredy yet again in the final of the Helmdon Mercury and Herald Cup at Helmdon, 6.15pm.
