Cycling: Young riders lead the way

TOWCESTER rider Hannah Barnes won the under-16s British Cycling Youth Championships last Saturday in Preston as she enjoyed a second successive big race victory.
The previous week the 15-year-old Sponne School pupil won the Blackpool Grand Prix de Dames National Series Circuit Race in Blackpool.
The Preston girls' race was over 20 laps of the cycling arena and taking part were many of the country's top young riders.
Barnes was in the leading group as they reached the closing stages and crossed the line first in a bunch sprint to win the champion's jersey.
Harriet Owen, from Bicester Millenium Cycling Club, took the silver medal to continue her tremendous progress.
The Advertiser & Review region now contains the two best under-16 girl riders in Britain.
BMCC riders raced in the classic Marmote Sportive on July 5 which included three famous climbs in the Alps, Col De Telegraph, Galibier and Alpe D'Huez. Ken Smith finished in a time of 8:49:58 achieving gold standard, as did Andy Hill in a time of 9:03:44. Steve Dunn completed it in 9:15:19 achieving silver standard along with David Smith with 10:34:25.
On July 7 Tim Wilmer raced at the Milton Keynes Bowls road race and finished in eighth position collecting some more racing points.
Will Jenkins raced in his first road race, The Oakley Village Road Race on July 12 and finished just behind the sprinters in 12th position gaining valuable road racing experience and finishing just outside the points. In the time trials John Bourton raced in the Oxonian 10-mile TT on July 12 and posted a time of 22:56 for 13th place out of 49 riders.
The BMCC Club Championship 25 mile TT was on July 15, 10 laps round a very windy Weston-on-the Green. Jonathan Sadler won the club men's trophy, Claire Sadler won the ladies cup and John Bourton won the vets trophy.
