BRACKLEY bagged a vital away point as they fought out a 0-0 draw at Bedford Town on Tuesday (02/09) – thanks to the heroics of keeper Richard Knight.
In a closely-fought Southern League premier division contest, man-of-the-match Knight pulled off a string of tremendous saves to deny Bedford, who had won their last two league games.
Brackley by contrast had suffered two consecutive defeats to dent an otherwise bright start to the season.
Saints were shackled all night by Bedford's tight defence, frustrating striker Ben Mackey and winger Tom Winters.
In the first 45 minutes Bedford had the best chance of a goal just before half-time when midfielder Rob Miller's close-range effort was well saved by the quick-thinking Knight.
Mackey had a number of goal-bound efforts blocked and then scuffed his shot wide when one-on-one with keeper Armitt after being put through by Winters on the half-hour.
After the break Saints tried to impose themselves on the game, but it was Bedford who grew more dominant.
In the 54th minute, increased Bedford pressure saw striker Andrew Phillips hit a post, but the Brackley defence held firm.
After 67 minutes Knight again denied Bedford as he parried away Aaran Cavill's effort for a corner.
Mackey was replaced by Richard Peirson late on, while Josh Green came on for Jamie Paterson.
Seven minutes from the final whistle, Knight was again the hero when he diverted away Miller's goal-bound header to keep a clean sheet for the visitors.
Brackley: Knight, Farley, Perpetuini, Blossom, S.Hadland, Paterson (Green), Cracknell, Savage, Spencer, Mackey (Peirson), Winters.
Brackley will hope to return to winning ways when they entertain Cambridge City tomorrow, Saturday, in the BGB league.
