TWO teams from Moretonville JFC were in France from May 29 –31 to compete in a tournament organised by the Town Twinning Committee in Mouvaux and played at Parc Sportif, Pierre De Coubertin, Mouvaux.
Boys from Moretonville under-12, under-13 and under-14 teams were selected to represent Buckingham in two teams named Moretonville Town and Moretonville Athletic specifically for this tournament.
Playing in new kits, specially commissioned for the tournament, the Moretonville sides played against teams from other towns also twinned with Mouvaux from Germany, Belgium and France.
The teams were U. Halluin, ES Mouvaux, Nox Les Mines, Tourcoing FC and ES Wasquehal from France, Fan 96 from Belgium, and Neukirchen-Vluyn from Germany.
While in France, the boys were accommodated at Houtmony Spiritual hostel in Mouvaux and meals were provided by a local school.
The boys also attended a civic reception during their stay.
Official polo shirts were provided for the boys as they represented the town, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Peter Grief of the Whiteleaf Business Centre.
Moretonville managers Phil West, Paul Hassell, Mike Marshall and Malcolm Holt had trained the tournament squads since February and the boys delivered some excellent performances against academy strength sides.
The two Moretonville sides finished eighth and tenth out of sixteen, which was a credit to Buckingham town and Moretonville Junior Football Club.
The teams were well supported by the many parents who also made the trip.
The players in the squad were Edward Arnold, Declan Basset, Ben Bennett, Adam Bradbury, Daniel Bradley, Alex Burns, Jason Dickinson, George Ford, James Foster, Alistair Freer, Ben Griffiths, Steven Hassell, James Hislop, Chris Holt, Nial Jeacock, Max Linden, Daniel McAndrew, Samuel Melvin, Ben North, Jack Nottingham, Kyle Pasmore, Ali Preston, Adam Robinson, Joe Rushton, Dan Staley, Lyndon Stotesbury, Sean Stutchbury, Thomas Thwaites, Chris West, Charlie Waumsley and Jack Wignall
The trip represented the culmination of many months of effort from the Town Twinning Association and Moretonville committee member Mark Chapman, who has been tireless in his efforts working with the French tournament organisers and managing the logistics involved in getting two football squads to France and back.
Bernard Russell, of the Mouvaux Twinning Committee, who was the official link between France and England during the tournament, has expressed his hope that this tournament will be hosted in Buckingham in the future.
