Golf: Hall and Pearce win Whittlebury titles

Jean-Michel Hall and Christine Pearce were worthy winners of the club championships at Whittlebury Park Golf Club last weekend.
Hall was leader in the clubhouse after scoring a magnificent 71 on the first day and after notching a second round of 71 went home on Sunday crowned men's club champion and the winner of the Catlow Cup.
Marcus McGrady came in runner-up on the Saturday and maintained that position at the close of play on Sunday.

The Forrest Putter, the nett competition for handicaps 0-18, was won by Patrick Fitzsimmons with scores of 71 & 63, closely followed by Jean-Michel Hall with nett scores of 67 & 67.

The Wainwright Cup, eligible for handicaps 19-28, was won by Ken Hignett with a superb nett score of 63. Michael Griffiths was pipped into second with a nett 64.

Competition in the ladies section was equally close with Christine Pearce coming home the well-deserved club champion. She led the way with a gross score of 94 on the Saturday and knocked six shots off this on Sunday to capture the Alexander Challenge Cup, with Jan Lewis finishing in second with excellent scores of 96 & 93.

The ladies nett prize, the Samuels Trophy, went to Ada Parr with two magnificient days' golf, notching nett scores of 76 & 69.

Chris Pearce was second in the nett competition. Ladies' handicaps, 29-36, were played for the Captains Cup over 27 holes. Sue Simpson led after the first day with a nett 76 and held off Jo Price to take first place.

Whittlebury Park is staging part of the Euro Pro Tournament next week from August 13-15. The tour is televised to a worldwide audience of over 300 million in more than 60 countries by Sky TV.

Whittlebury is inviting companies to become involved in the Pro-Tour through sponsorship of a golf hole.

Sponsorship will also include a three ball team to play in the pre-tournament Pro-Am on August 12. The club will allocate teams one of the leading professionals from the Pro-Tour to make up a four-ball on the 18 holes.
