OVERNIGHT rain, regular showers and gusting winds were not the conditions that competitors were hoping for at Buckingham Golf Club President's Day.
However, that didn't deter 159 members and guests from entering the event, hosted by club president David Carr.

In a Stableford competition played off 7/8 handicap, the majority of entrants found good scoring difficult, although there were a few notable exceptions.

Andy McCreath was perhaps one of the most popular winners in years as he posted a remarkable 44 points to take the overall trophy by two clear points.

Division 1 was headed by Dave Briggs with 40 points, followed by Roy Marsden on 39, with Rob Mason and Mick Jenner both scoring 37 points.
Winner of Division 2 was junior member Ben Oliver on 42 points, putting him six points clear of Richard Harper, while Stephen Howard, Guy Woolley and Jonathan Carpenter each scored 35 points.

In the ladies' competition Marie Dennis led home the 24 contestants with an excellent 38 points, putting her four points clear of lady captain, Sharon Dale.

Mo Dawson took third place on 33 points, with Jackie Boath, June Briggs and Liz Martin all scoring 31 points. Marie Dennis also won the prize for the nearest-the-pin competition on the par three fourth hole while Paul Cruse took the prize for the nearest the pin in two strokes on the 18th hole.

Although playing conditions were not pleasant, an entertaining day was enjoyed by all. Thanks must go to the starters, to the ladies who staffed the half-way house for refreshments, to the green keepers for getting the course in excellent condition and to Chris Sloggett, Amy Cowling and their staff who provided the evening catering.

Special mention should go to resident PGA professional, Greg Hannah, who worked a 14-hour day organising the competition and the prizes, to Bill Dodd, chairman of competitions and to club president David Carr for his generosity in hosting an excellent day for all who attended.

The previous day 42 men took part in round 15 of the Dr Stableford Cup when conditions were windy, but dry.

Rob Johnson led them home with 41 points, one clear of John Field, with Chris Wilkes and Bryan Rice a further point back. Geoff Viccars, Mike Lightfoot and Stephen Jones were the only others to play better than handicap, each scoring 37 points.
