A TREMENDOUS fightback by Buckingham Ladies 1st XI saw them grab the honours with a golden goal in the final of the National Trophy competition last Saturday to seal a unique cup and league double.
The ladies had been behind 2-0 to Teddington at the Old Loughtonians venue and battled back to make it 2-2 at full time.

As the game went into extra time, captain Tracy Hooker sunk Buckingham's opponents in the fourth minute as she slipped the ball under the Teddington 'keeper at the far post to trigger ecstatic scenes of celebration from Buckingham's travelling band of supporters.

A delighted Hooker commented afterwards: "It was a fantastic team performance to cap a great season. The girls showed real character and commitment to come back from 2-0 down and the supporters really got behind us."

Buckingham found themselves in arrears as lively Teddington struck in the 22nd minute following a penalty corner, which they converted with a well-taken strike.

Although going into the break 1-0 down, Buckingham however were confident they could get back into the game. But despite early Buckingham pressure, a swift counter by Teddington resulted in a penalty corner that led to a penalty stroke. This was converted to put the ladies 2-0 behind inside two minutes.

But Buckingham fought back. They dominated the next 10 minutes and were rewarded when Milly Weymss opened their account with a neat finish from close range in the 13th minute.

Buckingham continued to press for the equaliser, roared on by their supporters. This came in the 24th minute from a fine passing move.
First, Jo Hunter found player of the match Tracy Hooker whose perfectly weighted pass was met by Charlotte Borton Berry, who finished from close range.

From then on it was all Buckingham, but a succession of unsuccessful penalty corners, missed chances and outstanding goalkeeping somehow kept the ladies at bay and sent the match into golden goal extra time.

Though the ladies looked tired, Buckingham immediately went on the offensive earning two penalty corners in the opening minutes, neither of which was converted. Then in the fourth minute, captain Hooker found a way through to score the winning goal and celebrate a superb battling victory, with the cheers of Buckingham's supporters ringing in her ears.

Having achieved the league and trophy double the side is looking forward to a well-earned rest before taking on South Division One sides next year with the hope of pushing for a place in the national league.
