Motorsport: Cunningham linked to Mustang team
NEIL Cunningham has been linked to a drive with the Geneva-based Matech Mustang Racing team for future rounds of the 2008 FIA GT3 European Cup.
The Swiss team run three of the American V8-muscle cars in the FIA GT3 series that kicked off at Silverstone last month, and Cunningham has been approached regarding his availability to drive.
The second round of the FIA GT3 European Championship takes place at Monza in Italy next weekend and it's possible that following Matech Racing's approach, Cunningham could be drafted into the team for the Monza event.
Cunningham last raced at Monza in a round of the Le Mans Series twelve months ago, and he said on Tuesday: "I am very keen to see this deal concluded. I love the Mustang brand and currently enjoy racing a 1966 Ford Mustang in Historic Touring Car events. To drive a 2008-specification Mustang would be really good and I am working hard to try and conclude the deal."
He added: "This approach came out of the blue really. We made some enquiries before the start of the season if a drive was available. It looked like Martin Bartek and his Matech team had secured all their drivers for the 2008 season, but then an e-mail was received last week asking if I was available – the deal is progressing day by day and I hope to have some confirmation shortly."
The Matech team also field Ford GT cars in the FIA GT3 Championship and the opening two rounds at Silverstone were won by a team car driven by Ian Khan and Thomas Mutsch.
Roger Duckworth and Mark Broomfield return to the special stages this weekend for the first time since an accident in Ireland at the end of 2007, to contest the RBS International Manx Rally.
The Whittlebury and Blakesley duo will start the Isle of Man-based event, a round of the MSA Gravel Rally Championship, at number two in a Subaru Impreza WRC, prepared by Bicester's Autosportif. Former National champions Duckworth and Broomfield have a good record on the Isle of Man and are aiming for a top three finish against a strong entry.
Leading the entry is a similar Subaru WRC of Kenny McKinstry and Noel Orr. Subaru WRC cars complete the top five starting positions.
