MARSH Gibbon Football Club secretary Esme Stokes has been honoured for her outstanding services to the sport spanning more than 50 years.
The 78-year-old won a Barclays Spaces for Sports Local Hero Award, plus a £1,000 cheque to spend on the charity of her choice.
Mrs Stokes, who lives in the village with her husband Frank, has worked tirelessly to help hundreds of children and adults enjoy their passion for football.
Combining the jobs of club secretary and treasurer, she also does everything from mending the kit to collecting corner flags and providing the half-time tea at home matches.
Her fundraising efforts and support over the years have helped expand the club, which now fields two men's teams and four youth sides.
She was nominated for the award by her daughter Marcelle Turner, who is also club chairman.
She said: "Her contribution to the club is truly amazing.
"At nearly 80 years of age she still comes to every home game and never fails to cheer her boys on to victory. We all owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude for her tireless work."
Mr Stokes added: "Esme is delighted with the award and it's a real boost for the club."
The Spaces for Sports scheme is a £30million community sponsorship run by Barclays, which creates sports sites across the UK in areas that lack facilities. Already some 100 sites have been opened.
