BICESTER made seven changes on Saturday from the starting line-up after their match last week, but once again the back line was starved of any good possession, losing to Grove 24-8.
Bicester transgressed at their own scrums at least five times and conceded a total of 20 penalties and free kicks.

The scores were level at half-time but Grove used the wind better than the visitors, scoring three penalties and a converted try in
the second-half to deservedly win the game.

Bicester went ahead after eight minutes when debutant fly-half Tom Barnes slotted over a 25-metre penalty kick.

Fourteen minutes later, Grove full-back Roger Sevier missed a kick from the same distance but his side quickly took the lead when scrum-half Mark Boler squeezed over on the left from a quick penalty move which followed a five metre scrum.

Bicester then played their best rugby of the afternoon, after flanker Waisake Rokobati drove powerfully towards the try line on the left.

Scrum-half Nick Kenny then took a quick tap penalty and the ball was quickly spun along the backs from the left to right for winger Leigh Rushworth to outpace the Grove cover defence and touch down in the corner.

Three minutes from half-time Grove equalised with a penalty kick from Roger Sevier.

After the break Sevier completed a hat trick of penalties. Ten minutes from time he banged over a superb long-range kick from close to the halfway line. Finally, replacement prop James Wallbridge drove to the line-off a strong Grove scrummage and Sevier again converted.

  • Aylesbury Athletic were beaten by Bicester II 25-21 in the BBO 1 North League. Tries were by J. Hicks, Sekove Bale, Ben Waqa and S. Tuks, with a penalty and conversion from Craig Smith

  • Bicester were 21-8 down at half-time but fought back brilliantly in the second-half to score 17 points without reply.

Matches on Saturday, October 11, include Bicester v Swindon (home) in the SC North League. Bicester II entertain Bicester III in the BBO 1 North League, while Bicester III visit Chipping Norton II).
