BUCKINGHAM continued in winning form with their first-ever league victory at Swindon last Saturday.
The 28-3 victory takes them two points clear at the head of Southern Counties North league with four wins out of four, three of these gained away from home.
Swindon fielded a very big pack for this game, but Buckingham held their own in the set pieces with Sam Laird and Matt Anderson outstanding while Graham Kemp and Luke Bridges cleaned up their own line-outs and spoiled much of the opposition's.
Henry Colver and Andy Turvey were once more the pick of the backs but everyone played well, especially in defence, while James Hulston and Mark Chase caught the eye with some fine breaks.
Buckingham opted to play against the strong wind in the first half and had to defend desperately in the opening minutes as the home side launched attack after attack. Eventually, after seven minutes the Buckingham threes were caught offside at a scrum and Swindon took the lead with a simple penalty goal. Within three minutes Buckingham were level as Swindon were penalised for pulling down in a ruck and Colver slotted the kick from 30 metres out.
From the kick-off Tom Amos fielded the ball before unloading to Anderson who broke clear with a 40-metre driving run which took him almost to the Swindon line. The ball was heeled quickly and some snappy passing to the left saw Colver with an overlap and the centre touched down near the corner, converting the try himself and putting Buckingham into a 10-3 lead.
Swindon defended well for the next few minutes, but a score from Buckingham increased their lead when Greg Laird brought the backs into play and following good approach work by Chase and Andy Jackson, Turvey came into the line at pace and powered over in the corner, Colver's conversion attempt just missing.
Swindon then rallied and once again the Buckingham side had to defend against repeated attacks.
Two relatively easy penalty attempts with the wind at his back were both missed by the Swindon outside-half otherwise the half-time score would have been much closer than the 15-3 to Buckingham when the interval whistle sounded.
In the second half Swindon completely changed their tactics. Instead of attempting to attack through their backs, their big pack kept the ball tight and kept play close to the touch lines. Buckingham became more and more frustrated, but Colver kept the scoreboard ticking over with two more penalty goals and finally, in the closing seconds of the game, Sam Laird broke away from the base of a scrum and a powerful run took him through five attempted tackles before scoring a sensational try in the corner.
Colver again landed the difficult kick taking him past 100 league points in only four matches.
Buckingham II enjoyed a fine 37-5 home win over Witney last Saturday. In a brilliant display of rugby they took their opponents apart with a win which takes them into a middle of the table position in a very strong league.
Scorers were Jim Mackway with three tries, with Sam Deal and Al Solera notching one each. Tim Norman converted three and also kicked two penalty goals.
Buckingham under-15 Hawks beat Towcester 19-10 at home. Josh Croxhill, Brodie Smith and man of the match Craig Dumbarton scored tries, with Tom Gurney converting two in a hard-fought game.
Buckingham under-15s Eagles edged Beaconsfield 14-12 away. Try scorers were Dom Reynolds and James Barnard, with Joe Hatton converting.
