BICESTER were swept aside by a ruthlessly efficient Buckingham last Saturday, who made it three wins out of three to stay top of the league.

Visitors Buckingham entertained the large crowd with a 53-0 win - a scintillating exhibition of total running rugby, which included seven tries scored and six conversions.

Forwards James Hartnett and Luke Bridges, centre Henry Colver and full back Andy Turvey were outstanding for the visitors, who must surely be destined to challenge for promotion if they continue to play rugby of this quality.

Bicester, who were handicapped by the dismissal of prop Tony Shaw for allegedly punching hooker Seth Williams after 37 minutes, were again lacking cohesion and their forwards won very little good quick ball at the set pieces.

To their credit, Bicester contained the visitors' attack for 24 minutes thanks to at least seven stunning tackles, three of which came from winger Alec Warriner and one apiece from Chris Nash and Paul Leverton.

Then, inevitably, Buckingham opened their account when a clearance kick by Leverton failed to find touch and a barnstorming drive by lock Andy Thompson took him over the line on the right for a try which Henry Colver converted.

Eight minutes later Colver slotted over a 40-metre penalty kick before a powerful surge up the middle by Thompson ended in prop forward Matt Tutt touching down for another try converted by Colver. Colver then found himself in space and sprinted 50 metres to the posts for an unconverted try.

Five minutes from half time the visitors quickly recycled line-out ball on the right into the centre for lock Luke Bridges to plunge across the try line.

Colver converted and added a penalty on the stroke of half-time to put the game beyond Bicester's reach.

The rout continued 15 minutes after the break. Bicester were harassed into kicking their scrum possession into touch and, once again, superb recycling of the line-out ball presented Colver with his second try which he sealed with his fourth conversion.

Bicester then kept Buckingham at bay for 22 minutes during which they won three scrums, three penalties and three line-outs in quick succession before Turvey and Colver launched yet another Buckingham attack.

Next, it was prop James Hartnett's turn to finish off some slick handling down the centre and right at the end full-back Andy Turvey took advantage of a Bicester defensive error to race 55 metres to the line down the right.

Colver converted both these tries to bring him a highly impressive points tally of 28, consisting of six conversions, two penalties and two tries.

  • Bicester II were beaten 29-12 by Bletchley II In the BBO 1 North League last Saturday. Bicester's tries came from Qalo Eliki and Marau Tuiwai and a conversion by Alastair Smith.
