A roundabout way of dealing with safety concerns

’Dangerous’ road markings on the Tesco roundabout are going to be repainted and developers have been threatened with losing the scheme if they do not redesign it urgently.

A safety review by Bucks County Council found the lane markings and arrows could cause crashes and it has ordered a redesign.

The consortium behind the Lace Hill estate, including Barratt and Bovis, are responsible for the roundabout and must now redesign it.

But if they do not reply before Friday (July 31), county council transport chiefs will strip them of the scheme and do it themselves.

At full council last week, Robin Stuchbury, Bucks County Councillor and Aylesbury Vale District Councillor for Buckingham South, said developers need to take ‘full responsibility for the impact of their failures’.

But the council’s transport chief, Mark Shaw, said if the redesign is not completed soon, the developers will lose out.

He said: “We have been pushing and pushing the developers on these issues and we have threatened to invoke their bond.

“What that means is we will get money back to do the scheme.

“That would dramatically affect their business and their ability to do business so this is a very serious thing we are threatening them with.

“We are working on behalf of residents, for residents, but most importantly for safety on our road network.”

Work on the roundabout by the consortium started in December 2013 but overran by more than 20 weeks.

Buckingham Town Councillor Jon Harvey, who led a 2,000-strong petition in February which called for an urgent redesign to be done, thinks the remedy work is also long overdue.

He said: “It’s a dangerous roundabout and quite frankly, this should have been dealt with a long time ago.

“When you start contracting the work out, the line of accountability gets very blurred and something gets lost. It’s a terribly inefficient way of doing things.

“There have been several accidents and constant car horns.”

A spokesman from the consortium of developers said: “The report summary concerning the roundabout in question has been received and an initial response has been sent to Bucks County Council.

“Following further feedback from the council, final proposals are now being drafted.”
