OXFORDSHIRE: Church authorities are appealing for the return of an extremely rare medieval alabaster panel stolen earlier this month,
The Diocese of Oxford does not want to identify the church to protect it from further attacks, but has appealed for information.
The panel is one of six discovered hidden in the churchyard in 1814 by workmen digging a new vault.
Natalie Merry, of the Diocese of Oxford, said: “This priceless and irreplaceable piece is of great historical and emotional importance to the church.”
The elaborate sculpture, known as a reredos, would once have decorated the area behind the altar. Contact the Diocese of Oxford on 01865 208227.
