Artists to welcome visitors to Northants Open Studios

CERAMICS, glass, jewellery, photographs and paintings can be seen in Brackley next month as part of Northants Open Studios 2010.

The visual arts festival, founded in 1996, is the largest event of its kind in the county. Each year, during the first two weeks of September, artists invite members of the public into their studios to witness works of art taking shape.

Visitors can have a look inside a potter's studio, discuss carving with a stonemason, or watch demonstrations of painting, printmaking and crafts of all sorts.

Among the events is an exhibition in The Studio at 5 Elm Drive, Brackley, open from Saturday, September 11, to Thursday, September 19, running from 2pm to 5pm daily.

The event will also be held on Thursday and Friday, September 16 and 17, between 6pm and 9pm.

As well as main exhibits, there will be inexpensive items for sale, such as jewellery, glass, cards, pots and unframed work.

A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the local charity CAFE (Creative Activities for Elderly People).

CAFE will also exhibit work by elderly people in care homes, such as painting, weaving, collages and cards.

The two-week festival will begin this weekend with an artists' trade fair in Kelmarsh Hall, running from 11am to 5pm this Sunday and on Bank Holiday Monday.

More than 120 studios and venues across Northants will host events over the next fortnight, including Rowans Gallery in Market House Courtyard, Brackley, and artist Elaine Coe's studio in 35 Blackbird Close, Brackley.

Glass, jewellery, paintings, photography, and wood turning can be seen in the Alderton Art Festival on September 4 and 5, held in and around the Church of St Margaret in Alderton near Towcester.

Artist Val Goldfinch will exhibit paintings, prints and bags in The Dolphin Cafe in Towcester.

Full programme details, including directions and opening hours, are available online – log on to www.openstudios.org.uk.
