The chairman of Buckingham Conservatives has dismissed claims Buckingham MP John Bercow intends to resign as “pure speculation”.

An article in the Mail On Sunday yesterday claimed the Commons Speaker plans to stand down after the next general election and could be succeeded as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Buckingham by current Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

The article said: “Mr Bercow has told the local Conservative Party association in Buckingham that he will resign as Speaker in the middle of the next Parliament.”

But chairman of the Buckingham Conservative Association, Lawrence Renshell, told the Advertiser: “It’s not true, it’s pure speculation.

“We have had no communication with the Mail On Sunday.

“Nobody has spoken to me, or to the president or the agent.

“We have no idea where the story’s come from and we can’t comment on a story we know nothing about.

“It’s not for us to speculate what John will do. It’s up to John when he decides to resign.”
