80 years of feeding the districts communities

AFTER 80 years of serving fish and chips to the communities of north Bucks a long-running mobile fish and chip shop is looking to the future.

Howe and Co Fish and Chips, in Little Horwood, had its beginnings on September 5, 1930 when William John Howe started his business in Stony Stratford, at the age of 19.

Mr Howe built his vans himself, which were coal rangers, at Brackley Mill and soon worked his way up to owning three vans. He continued to run the business alongside his wife, Ena May.

In 1953, the business moved to Little Horwood and Mr Howe converted his vans to paraffin, then to LPG in the 1960s.

The business has stayed in the family ever since and is now run by Michael and Jan Howe while their children, Adam, Kirsty and Ben are family partners. Also involved in the business are Adam's wife, Karen and Ben's girlfriend, Charlotte Wallace. Eighteen family and staff members run the business.

William's grandson, Adam, said: "We would like to thank all our past and present employees for everything they have done and our loyal customers.

"We have been going for 80 years and it is a superb business - it is really thriving."

Howe and Co covers an area within a 15 mile radius of Little Horwood. It does set rounds Monday to Friday and on weekends, but is also available for events such as weddings and parties.

Adam added: "We also take food to pensioners and with some of them we take it in to them and give them a personal service. That can be a highlight of their week. They know that every Monday at 12.30pm we will be there and someone will take them something in to eat."

The vans go out every lunchtime between 11am and 3pm then return to be restocked for the evening round. All the food is cooked fresh in transit and is prepared daily.

The business is based at Greenacres Farm, on Mursley Road.
