An expert in UFOs and paranormal activity based in Blisworth will be representing Northants in the European Parliament from the beginning 2012.

Rupert Matthews, aged 50, is preparing to replace outspoken climate change sceptic Roger Helmer as the Conservative MEP for the East Midlands.

Mr Matthews, a married father of two, has written more than 180 books on history, military and paranormal subjects and has published books by several writers, including Mr Helmer.

His books include UFOs: A History of Alien Activity from Sightings to Abductions to Global Threat, Unexplained Ghosts and Spirits and The Sasquatch. Mr Matthews also runs an online course about the paranormal on behalf of the International Metaphysical University.

He is set to take over the £73,000-a-year Brussels role on December 31 and does so under the EU voting system which elects parties rather than candidates.

Mr Matthews declined to comment prior to taking up the role but in a statement he vowed to continue Mr Helmer’s battle against increasing European federalism.
