Green light for HS2

OPPONENTS of the Government’s high-speed rail plans have vowed to fight on after transport secretary Justine Greening announced the scheme would go ahead today.

In her announcement, Ms Greening said HS2 would be, “...the most significant transport infrastructure project since the building of the motorways.”

Martin Tett, chairman of the 51m alliance of local councils opposing the scheme, said it was, “...an immensely bad decision for Britain.”

“At a time of national austerity with rising unemployment and a massive deficit how can spending more than £32billion on a rail line be justified?,” he added.
