RUMOURS about the future of a pub in Westbury have been described as weird and wonderful by the agent for the new owner.
Andrew Bateson of AP Planning and Development said if he gets planning permission the new owner of the Reindeer Inn will convert the pub into a residential property for his family and elderly mother.
Mr Bateson said the pub had been a constant decline for up to a decade and was recently sold by pub company Admiral Taverns to John Latimer.
Mr Bateson said: “There have been some weird and wonderful rumours floating around about what will happen to the pub.
“But we met with representatives of the parish council to advise them of my clients intentions and why we are doing it.”
The pub was sold by Admiral Taverns late last year and in December Aylesbury Vale District Council received a planning application for change of use from business to residential.
Mr Bateson said although council policy erred in favour of retaining the pub they had established a clear argument the pub was financially unsustainable and that the village was served by alternative licensed premises; the Working Men’s Club, the Cricket Pavilion and the Westbury Sport and Social Club.
Lorraine Towner, chairman of the Sport and Social Club said the other establishments did not directly compete with pub and the while there is affection for the pub it was not well used by village residents.
