SCHOOL children got to meet a modern sporting legend when Lewis Hamilton officially launched the Mercedes Benz Driving Experience Centre this week.
Local children got to test run the new driving school last month, but this week the McLaren number one attended the official launch as the academy’s ambassador. School children from the area, including three from St Loys School in Lois Weedon, were invited to witness the launch and again had a chance to try out the cars.
After fielding questions from the children Ella Gray from Milton Kenyes was among a lucky few to be driven around the track, which includes the old Bridge Corner, by Lewis himself. The 15-year-old had to wipe away the tears of excitement as she sat as a passenger next to the former world champion. Afterward she said: “It’s just been an amazing experience, I’m almost speechless. I didn’t know at all until 11 o’clock this morning that I was even coming here. And my grandfather’s a big F1 fan, I got into it through speaking to him about it. To actually get in a car with Lewis Hamilton was the best thing, absolutely amazing.”
Florence Sheppard from St Loys said: “I was like, ‘I’m just about to meet Lewis Hamilton,’ I can’t wait to tell everyone I know.”
With a fleet of dual control cars, and professional drivers, the centre is equipped to train anyone over 1.5m tall on a wide range of everyday scenarios.
Young drivers can be shown important car control skills such as pulling away at junctions, steering through corners and roundabouts, braking, reversing and psychological skills - all in a safe and controlled environment.
