Commitment to support firms who want to recycle

Oxon County Council hope to rid the business world of misconceptions over recycling after signing a commitment to ensure they get the services they need.

The Business Recycling and Waste Services Commitment follows a Government review which recognised the key role played by councils in helping businesses access the right services to meet the challenge of the ‘three Rs’ - Reduction, Reuse and Recycling.

National research shows small businesses do not recycle for a variety of reasons, including a lack of awareness, a perception that contracts are inflexible and doubts that materials are being recycled, or just end up in landfill.

Oxon County Council’s commercial waste reduction officer, Gavin Hull said: “Businesses benefit financially from operating more efficiently and reducing waste is an essential part of this. We can offer businesses audits and advice for reduction, reuse and access to recycling services.

“Most small businesses would like to be able to recycle at work as they do at home, particularly as the cost of sending waste to landfill is becoming ever more expensive. We want to help improve recycling services, reassure people that their efforts are not wasted and ultimately save businesses money.”
