STEEPLE Claydon School lost a much-loved member of staff when site manager Pat Hern retired this month.

The whole community was invited to attend a ‘farewell bash’ for Mrs Hern, who worked at the school for 27 years.

Even MP for Buckingham John Bercow popped in to join in the celebrations.

Headteacher Becky Ellers said: “It went very well, we had lots of parents, old members of staff and old governors.”

Among former staff members was former headteacher Sue Chadbaun.

Mrs Ellers said: “It was a complete surprise for Pat. She didn’t know anything about it. She’s a big cricket fan so we gave her a massive mounted picture of the Ashes.

“The Key Stage 1 children learned Jerusalem, her favourite hymn, and the children all did cards, pictures and paintings. Year 6 wrote poems about her.”

Afterwards tea and cakes were served in the multimedia suite.

Mrs Ellers said: “The school and cricket were the two loves of her life. She was just so dedicated, she would do absolutely anything for the school. She is a lovely, lovely lady.”
