A NEW weekly job club is opening in Buckingham next week.

The first meeting of the job club, which is free to MK18 residents, takes place from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday, May 1, at the Swan Community Hub, in the former Toc H building at the rear of West Street.

The club is supported by the Sure Start Children’s Centre, the churches, and the Mayor of Buckingham.

Facilitator Stephen Townsend told the Advertiser each weekly session of the job club will be different.

Mr Townsend, who used to run confidence building courses for mental health charity Mind, will be leading sessions on ‘soft’ skills including networking, with experts being brought in to cover subjects such as CV writing, interview skills and letter writing.

The first hour will be formal, followed by a session of informal networking.

Mr Townsend said: “Thirty per cent of jobs are found through people you know.”

And he added: “I’m making it very user-friendly. I’ve run personal development courses in the past and the first week is the most daunting. It’s not 30 minutes of lecture. I like to see people engage, rather than listening.

“I don’t envisage anyone’s going to be bored. It’s their sessions. The more you put in, the more you’ll get out of it.”
