THORNTON College pupils went back to the dark days of 1940 yesterday, when pupils spent 24 hours as wartime evacuees.

It is believed the school opened its doors to evacuees during the war. And yesterday, today’s Year 3 pupils got to re-live a time when millions of children escaped the Blitz for a new life in the countryside

Dressed in period costume with identity labels and carrying suitcases and gas masks, girls and staff set off by coach for the Imperial War Museum, at Duxford, to learn about rationing and air raid drill and tuck into Spam sandwiches wrapped up in greaseproof paper.
