A WELL-KNOWN Winslow business couple are retiring at the beginning of July.
Joan and Arthur Weakley have run Lakers Nursery, in Furze Lane, since the 1980s, and their closing down sale ends on Sunday, July 3.
Joan, aged 64, has lived in Winslow all her life. She and Arthur, aged 74, met in 1960 when he came down from Stockport to work as a gardener at Stowe School.
The pair began their business selling vegetables at the door, then branched out with a single poly-tunnel of bedding plants in 1985.
“We sold out in a week,” Joan recalls, “and we’ve gone on from that to eight tunnels!
“I can assure you we’ve not made a fortune at it, but I’ve enjoyed every minute.”
The pair, who are Jehovah’s Witnesses are moving to Great Horwood and planning to spend more time on their ministry work.
They have four daughters – Deborah, Elida, Heidi and Stefanie – a son, Kevin, and 12 grandchildren.
Joan said: “I’d like to thank all our customers for all their support and especially for all their good wishes in the last few weeks. Everybody has been so kind.”
The nursery will continue under new ownership.
