A Buckingham woman celebrated her 100th birthday with afternoon tea at Villiers hotel.

Family and friends came from across the country to mark the special occasion with Violet Spragg on Sunday.

Violet was born on January 10 1916, in the middle of the Great War. Brought up in Hartlepool, she joined the WRNS during the Second World War, serving in the UK and Egypt.

After marrying Frank, an officer in the British Army, she spent several years based in Germany with her husband and two sons.

Violet also worked in retail and has done charity work throughout her life.

Following retirement, she volunteered at the Scope charity shop in Thatcham, near Newbury, until the age of 95.

She now lives in Buckingham, after moving to be closer to her family, and can often be seen shopping and chatting to staff in Waitrose and other shops around the town.

As well as her two sons, Violet has five grandchildren.
