A major road junction will be closed overnight next weekend, to allow urgent work to be undertaken.
County councillor Robin Stuchbury has obtained a two-night emergency road closure order for the junction of the A421 Buckingham bypass and the A413 London Road, following discussions with police and Bucks County Council (BCC) safety officers.
This is so urgent work can be carried out which will allow the Charter Fair to be brought safely into town on October 17.
The roundabout will be closed from 6pm to 6am overnight on Saturday and Sunday, October 11 and 12, and lane closures will be in place on Monday, October 13.
Mr Stuchbury said: “To complete these works in a safe manner while the road remained open was impossible. The Charter Fair was an awful impetus to resolve the problem. I met the police last week and they were concerned about safety and staffing issues.
“They would have had to find extra officers to be on the roundabout at the time the Charter Fair came into town.
“This would have been an extra cost they hadn’t budgeted for and the town council would have been charged for that time.
“What I’ve done is try to iron out this problem in one.
“Only time will tell if I’ve been successful.
“I apologise for any temporary noise but to do it any other way would extend the works further into the future.
“Yes, this will be a weekend of evening works, but by the end of the weekend, my hope is the works will be completed so movement round the roundabout will be safer and many of the current traffic issues will have subsided because they have the full width of the roundabout.
“I must remind the public, these are not BCC roadworks – they are the roadworks of the Hallam development. BCC is only overseeing they are carried out safely.”
