The Meningitis Trust, the UK’s top charity supporting people affected by meningitis, is challenging individuals and groups to test themselves by entering its English 3000s – Trek in the Lake District event. The event, in September, tackles eight notable 3,000 ft plus peaks, all in 48 hours.

Included in the challenge as part of an overall route of 47 kilometres are Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Helvellyn Lower Man, Broad Crag, Ill Crag, Scafell, Symonds Knott and, at 3,209ft the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike.

The challenge requires energy, commitment and a positive attitude, but the Trust offers support to those taking part every step of the way. This includes training, dietary and fundraising advice, travel throughout the event, accommodation, meals and a qualified safety team to guide the group on the mountains.

Event organiser Steve Williams said: “This is the third English 3000s we’ve organised. It’s a popular event and a real experience for those taking part.

“Tackling eight mountains in such a short space of time is something of an endurance test of course, but it’s also great fun and creates a brilliant atmosphere. Each mountain provides a mental as well as a physical challenge, but the sense of exhilaration those taking part get on completion makes all their effort worthwhile.

“If you’re looking for just one event to test yourself with this year then this is the challenge for you. But places are limited, so sign up now.”

The challenge takes place between September 6 and 9 and the Trust is hoping to raise £29,000 from it, all of which goes towards supporting its vital work in providing free support and community-based services for those affected by this devastating disease.

The registration fee is £75 and the Trust asks that those taking part pledge to raise at least £500 in sponsorship.
