ENVIRONMENT: South Northants is set to receive almost £1.2m from central government, to help implement weekly food waste collections from next summer.

The announcement was made by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) on November 22 and follows South Northants Council’s successful bid to the ‘Weekly Collection Support Scheme’ launched in February 2011.

Councillor Dermot Bambridge, SNC’s member for environmental said: “This is fantastic news. It means we can go ahead with the planned enhancements to our collection services without putting an additional strain on our finances.

“The collection of food waste is just one of a number of changes residents are set to see. Additional recycling opportunities will also be introduced which will go a long way towards reducing the amount of waste that we send to landfill. It also means that residents will receive a better waste and recycling service and the changes will be better for the environment.”

A total of 90 projects from 85 councils were awarded funding from the over-subscribed scheme which was set up to support comprehensive and cost effective weekly collections.

SNC is set to receive 100 per cent of the funding applied for under a submission made jointly with authorities from Corby, Daventry, Kettering, Northampton and East Northants.
