£30 load leads to a £5,000 fine for fly-tipper

A BICESTER man has been hit with a fine almost 166 times more than he earned for dumping rubbish in a lane near Caulcott.

Mike Newman, 43, of Bartsia Road in Bicester, pleaded guilty to illegally dumping waste at Banbury Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

On April 10 last year, he was paid £30 to pick up a load of furniture, toys and waste including dirty nappies from a home in Lambourne Crescent in Bicester. The waste was found dumped in a lay-by in Lower Heyford Road.

Chairman of the bench, Deborah Backaus, said: “We are all sick and tired of driving around the countryside and seeing litter and waste dumped.”

Newman was fined £500 and told to pay £824.73 clean-up costs, £3,640 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge – totalling £4,979.73.
