30 years in business for town craftsman

A Winslow craftsman is celebrating 30 years in business this week.

Nigel Watmough, aged 53, runs LB Upholstery from a purpose-built workshop at his family home on the Buckingham Road, where he has lived with his Winslow-born wife Judy, aged 52, a nursing sister at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, since 1995.

The couple, who have two children, were married at Winslow Hall in 1979.

“Benjamin Britten’s brother played the organ at our wedding,” said Mr Watmough.

Daughter Vicky, aged 23, is about to move into a property just down the road, and son Paul, aged 21, helps in the workshop when he is home from university.

Mr Watmough started LB Upholstery on September 4 1982, in an old Nissen hut at the back of a shop in Leighton Buzzard.

As the business grew, he took on a shop in Leighton Buzzard’s Church Street, from where he built long-standing relationships, particularly with Dillamore’s furniture store, who still recommend customers to him.

“The shop was really successful but the bell just kept going,” he said.

“I was having to go in on Saturdays just to make up my time. That’s why I love working from home.”

Reputation and recommendation mean the order book is full until mid-November.

And even the current recession has been good for business, as people opt to have their existing suite re-upholstered rather than buy a new one.
