Residents at a public meeting opposing the development in January

The planning inspector at the helm of a public inquiry into the proposed 80-home development next to Buckingham Rugby Club is set to carry out a site visit to Buckingham today.

Inspector Christine Newmarch is expected to observe rush-hour traffic around the Old Gaol and has been invited to bring her wellies for a tour of the rugby club.

Bellway Homes went to appeal after Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) rejected its planning appplication to build 80 homes next to the existing housing development on Moreton Road.

A delegation of about 10 Maids Moreton residents turned up for the inquiry, which began on Tuesday at Aylebury Vale District Council’s Gateway offices, with five people requesting leave to speak.

District councillor for Buckingham North, Tim Mills, told the inspector: “This application has sparked more opposition, even outrage, than any I’ve seen in my nine years as a councillor.”

Maids Moreton resident David Child said the proposed homes would dwarf the existing Moreton Road, join Maids Moreton to the town and have a detrimental effect on local traffic.

Honorary secretary of Buckingham Rugby Club, Finlay Gemmell, said: “This new development “would very much prejudice the use of this well-run sports facility which is one of the community’s major sports clubs and should absolutely not be permitted.”

He said noise and floodlighting from the rugby pitches would intrude on the new neighbours, while the club was concerned about residents and dogs using the pitches as a public open space.
