RESIDENTS living in and around Brackley’s Old Town have been angered by the installation of play equipment which they say has blighted a cherished view of the parish church.

Last month Brackley Town Council installed several climbing walls at the Egerton House Playing Field within the shadow of the St Peter’s Church.

Mike Langlois from the near by Roman Estate said BTC have ignored Conservation Area guidelines despite the recent publication of a conservation area appraisal. Being under 4m high the climbing walls did not require planning permission.

Mr Langlois said: “The point is that this climbing frame has been installed in a Conservation area and that the conservation appraisal and management plan have been ignored by the council. If you look at the appraisal you will see a picture of the church taken from the Roman Estate side of the playing field from the access gates which is a lovely view across the park to the church, now blighted by this climbing frame.”

In an email from South Northants Council’s conservation officer Mr Langlois was told that had the play equipment needed planning permission they would have objected.

Brackley Mayor Chris Cartmell said they had only received one complaint and that during two years of consultation they had sent letters to residents in the surrounding area and those overlooking the park. The town council also held an exhibition of the plans in the town halls, and Mr Cartmell added: “There is a desperate need in that area for play equipment and we have an obligation as the town council to ensure there is sufficient play equipment spread around the town.”
