Work to remove sections of concrete prior to piling work at Candleford Court

Work is under way to rectify the problem of flooding at Buckingham’s Candleford Court apartment block.

The block of 103 apartments has been beset with flooding to its basement car park since May last year.

Last October, Guinness South refused to accept any more of the flats from builder Lagan Homes until the problem was resolved.

Last week, contractors used a floor saw with a giant circular blade to remove 1m2 sections of concrete from the basement floor, prior to specialist piling contractors starting work this week.

Lagan Homes’ commercial director Gerry Gardiner told the Advertiser the piling, which involves screwing giant augers deep into the bedrock below the basement, would not be noisy.

When the piling is done, the remaining concrete will be removed and replaced.

Mr Gardiner said “There has been a design failure that is recognised by all of the parties. We’re confident we will have a waterproof structure by Christmas and will hand it over to our client for occupation by March.”

The building contains space for a riverside cafe and a small retail unit, and Guinness South intends to begin marketing these units in the new year.

Guinness South has been holding fortnightly Have Your Say events to keep the block’s 26 residents informed as works progress and is recruiting a residents liaison officer.

The company will hold an open event in the spring when it is ready to begin letting the remaining apartments.
