Auctioneer Charlie Ross as Widow Wonkey

Local auctioneer and TV personality Charlie Ross is taking the role of Widow Wonkey, in the Bicester Choral and Operatic Society’s panto, The Magic Lamp.

Charlie Ross, who lives in Bucknell, is an on-screen regular in programmes such as Antiques Roadshow, Bargain Hunt and Flog It!

But for four nights this month, antiques expert Mr Ross will be donning a huge dress and spectacular hat to reprise the part he played when the show was first performed in 1988.

Mr Ross said: “We’ve been having so much fun rehearsing and it’s hilarious.

“What we really want now is for the people to come along and get involved, especially the kids.

“Panto needs a good audience to work.”

Mr Ross, who specialised in selling furniture, sold his business five years ago but still does some high-profile auctions, including a live auction on Sky to sell off memorabilia from the old Wembley Stadium.

Much of his work is now in the USA, where he goes three or four times a year.

The Magic Lamp is being co-directed by Mr Ross’s wife Sally, who runs the Perform music and drama school in Bicester, and Ali Marshall, who were both in the original show.

The musical director is Martin Quinn, who returned to the society last year,.

Mrs Ross said: “It’s such a clever show with some great songs.

“It’s some of the best Gilbert and Sullivan tunes and I think people will love it.”

“It was written for the society especially by George Metcalfe and Kate Cowdy. Kate died last year so it is lovely tribute to her.

“We haven’t had to update it much at all.”

Performances are at 7.30pm at Cooper School, Bicester, from Wednesday, November 21, to Saturday, November 24,.

There is also a matinee performance at 2.30pm on the Saturday.

Tickets £8 to £15 from S.H. Jones wine merchant in Sheep Street, via the box office on 01869 322938 or via website www.bcoswesing.org.uk
