AFTER bottles of human waste were found at the side of a street in Towcester residents are being asked if lorries should be banned from Old Tiffield Road.
During one of their regular litter last picks last summer, member of the Towcester Evening WI and Towcester Rotary Club filled 32 heavy duty black bags with litter strewn across hedges and grass verges.
They also found plastic bottles filled with urine beside the road which is regularly used by lorry drivers as a rest area.
Northants County Council has now opened a consultation into applying parking restrictions along that stretch of road.
Chris Lofts, NCC’s member for Towcester’ said the parking ban shows that local knowledge really can influence decision makers and added: “It came about during one of the regular litter picks across Towcester and during that Sue Hamilton and colleagues from the Evening WI cleared Old Tiffield Road.
“They found all this disgusting material. I wasn’t a county councillor at the time, but approaches were made to NCC.”
He added: “Although it is not a residential area it is used by families to get to the supermarket, it’s not very nice for kids to find things like that.”
Mr Lofts said the restrictions are likely to be agreed as there is a lorry park at the near-by Jacks Hill Cafe on the A5.
Mrs Hamilton said: “This is excellent news. I was disgusted to find human waste in an area so close to housing and shops. The parking ban will really help improve things.”
A spokesman for NCC said: “We have been made aware of obstruction and litter problems in the Old Tiffield Road, Towcester, and have been requested to introduce parking restrictions along this stretch of road.
“We are currently involved in a consultation process about introducing the relevant traffic regulation orders in the area.”
More details on the consultation will be published due course.
