Bank holiday family day supports local charities

AS ever, community groups in Winslow are getting ready to have a presence at the annual Winslow Show, on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Friends of Winslow Health Centre and Norden House Surgery are asking for donations of tombola prizes for their stall at the show. Any donations should be left at the surgery, on Avenue Road.

The Winslow Show has been a local agricultural show since the 19th century. Historically held in the field opposite Winslow Hall, on Sheep Street, it has closed only twice in the last 100 years.

This year’s event takes place from 9am to 5pm, courtesy of the new owners of Winslow Hall, Christopher and Mardi Gilmour, and the Brazier family.

A much-loved mix of agricultural show, horse show, gymkhana, dog show, and livestock, alongside craft, community and charity stands and family entertainment, the Winslow Show is attended by thousands of people every year.

Competitions to enter or watch include the Young Farmers’ tug of war, the dog show’s cutest pup or waggiest tail competition and the children’s fancy dress parade, which this year has an Olympic theme.

There will be a display of vintage and classic vehicles, with prizes awarded for the favourites.

This year for the first time, there will also be a prize for the best period-dressed driver or passenger to match their vehicle.

Run entirely by a dedicated committee of volunteers, the show generates thousands of pounds in proceeds which is donated back to local charities.

Last year, £14,000 was handed out to some 40 local good causes.

The Winslow Show Association committee is supported by volunteers from other local organisations, including the Lions Club of Winslow, Winslow Township Rotary Club, Edgcott and Winslow Young Farmers Club and the scout.

Local charities in need of funds should contact show secretary Sue Keane on 01296 713106 or via the website www.winslowshow.org.uk
