A man from Blakesley was part of a record breaking crowd at Althorp House during the eighth charity bike ride in aid of a national cancer charity and a Northampton hospice.

Last weekend Peter Semlar chose one of the most precarious ways to ride 25 miles around the home of the Spencer family raising money for the Macmillan Cancer Support and the Cynthia House Hospice.

He was among 1,100 others taking part hoping to break last year’s fundraising total of £47,000.

Last year 900 riders took part and since 2006 the event has raised nearly £200,000.

South Northants resident and BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley fired the starter’s pistol.

She said: “I can’t believe what an amazing sight it was to see all those riders stretching as far as the eye could see down the path in front of the house.

“It really was the most wonderful atmosphere with everyone keen to do their bit.”
