Four local ciders top the list of 44 ciders and perries coming to the Brackley Sausage and Cider Festival on Saturday, August 11.

One is from Northants, one from Banbury and two from Milton Keynes. The Northants cider is made by Tom and Doreen Hillier-Bird from cider apples grown at the couple’s farm in Hellidon.

It is the only cider made from fruit that is 100 per cent grown in Northants. The Hillier-Bird’s small-holding is also home to an orchard of pear trees and a fruity, medium perry (pear cider) made by the couple will also be at the festival.

The Banbury cider is made by Josephine Dakin and Antony Harrison, who are passionate about the restoration and upkeep of traditional orchards in the UK.

Their cider, Thorn Brook, is made from 100 per cent English apples and a still, dry version of the cider will be available at a festival. However a sparkling, bottled version will soon be coming to the streets of Brackley when it becomes available at the town centre Budgens.

Woughton Orchard and Virtual Orchard, the ciders from Milton Keynes, are both made from apples grown at a heritage orchard in Woughton.

Festival organiser Crispin Slee said: “We were due to have 30 ciders at the festival but we got carried away and we’re actually going to have 44.

“We have ciders and perries from all over the country, but it’s particularly special to have ciders made from fruit grown locally and produced by local people who are so passionate about what they do.”

The festival runs from midday to midnight at Brackley RUFC in Fine Lady Fields, Nightingale Close.

There will be live music from five bands, 20 varieties of gourmet sausage made by Duncan Brown of Brown’s Gourmet Sausages in Wollaston, and over 30 real ciders. Entry is £1.
