Buckingham School opens new further education centre

A new £1.8million Centre for Further Education is helping The Buckingham School to continue improving.

Businesses, parents, students and staff attended the opening of the new centre which has received funding from Bucks County Council last week.

The money has been spent on renovating some of the school’s buildings to create the new centre which brings together A-level and BTEC courses and requires students to be more self-sufficient.

Headteacher, Angela Wells, said the CFE brought together the best of both worlds.

“We are offering educational packages which meet the needs of the local commuity,” she said.

“The students are very proud of the new facilities.”

The centre’s classrooms have been renovated and include improved science labs, a darkroom for use by photography and forensic science students, and new study areas.

The Buckingham School has been showing vast improvements since Miss Wells took on the headship in 2008 when the school was in special measures.

The latest league tables show the school in the top four per cent nationally for student progress and students are now applying for, and getting into, Russell Group universities, the country’s top 24 universities. All of the leaving students are non-NEETS (not in education, employment or training).

CFE director, Joe Ryan, said the new way of working was having a positive effect on the students.

He said: “There has been a shift in our students’ approach to sixth form in terms of the attitudes towards it and their studies. We see more pride in our students.”
