SPECULATION on the future of a Brackley landmark has been sparked by the arrival of builder’s equipment.

Over the last few weeks builders hoardings have gone up around the Bell Tower in High Street and a mobile cherry picker has been parked outside.

Known locally by the old testament inscription above the main door as the ‘feed my lambs’ building, planning permission was granted in 2008 to convert it into 14 flats.

The building has a chequered history but began life in 1871 as a Church of England School. In 1975 permission was given to convert it into a restaurant and it has also been used briefly as a hotel and a night club.

Gwen Ryhs, chairman of Brackley Town Council’s planning committee welcomed the move.

She said: “I have always thought it was very good to have people living in the centre of a town, no matter what size that town is. People who live in the centre of a town breath life in to that town, they start to push for things and they want things to happen. They want restaurants, they want shops and meeting places.

“So in many respects to have things happening, rather than having empty properties has got to be a good thing.”

No one from the Witney based construction firm Builders Ede was available to comment.
