There has been a call for CCTV in south Northants towns after several chain stores were subject to burglaries and attempted burglaries over the few weeks.

In the early hours of Thursday, April 26, thieves tried to force entry to the Tesco store in Oxford Road, Brackley.

A police spokesman said it appeared a wheelie bin was stolen and placed against the front of the store in order to gain access. Although they were unsuccessful they damaged a padlock and a window frame. Police also recorded an alarm going off at the store on Tuesday, May 1, although this could have been a false alarm.

Then on Monday, May 7, burglars successfully broke into Boots Chemist in Market Place, Brackley by smashing a store front window.

The spokesman said: “Sometime around 5.30am offenders gained access to the store by smashing a large glass window and performed an untidy search of display counters.”

Although the details are unconfirmed there are also reports of Waitrose stores in Brackley and Towcester being targeted by thieves. Those attacks follow one successful, and one attempted burglary at the Waitrose in Buckingham. In the successful break-in during the early hour of Thursday, April 19 the contents of the tobacco kiosk were cleared out.

Commenting on a social networking site one Brackley residents said: “I think it’s time to petition for CCTV cameras in the main towns as there’s been so many incidents happening lately. We are easy target, being rural, also central UK, they can get away in any direction without being detected by any means of security cameras or patrolling police officers. Unless these thugs are stopped, it will only get worse I’m afraid.”

At this stage police are not linking the attacks.

Anyone with information about these attacks should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555111.
