Opening reception for Prebend House at the University of Buckingham. Professor of history John Clarke.

Around 100 members of the community in Buckingham were invited to celebrate the refurbishment of Prebend House at a drinks reception last week.

Buckingham mayor Ruth Newell was among the guests at the event hosted by the University of Buckingham’s vice-chancellor, Professor Terence Kealey and Sally Kealey.

The celebration was held in the reception rooms in Prebend House, which was the home of the mayor of Buckingham in the 19th century.

After a welcome from the vice -chancellor, professor of history, John Clarke, gave a detailed talk about the history of Prebend House and the area.

Prebend House dates back to at least 1610. Originally the home of the Bartlett brothers, who built up their estate through the tanning industry, it became the home of Alfred Charles Rogers, the mayor of Buckingham and the miller.

The first phase of the renovation started in 2010 and consisted of renovating the outside and making it weather proof.

The second phase involved refurbishing inside and well as the nearby coach house.

Prebend House has become a postgraduate centre for students in the liberal arts and a research centre for academis with tutorial rooms, offices and work spaces. The neighbouring coach house has been turned into a studio flat.

Donations are welcome to help pay for the refurbishment, which won a Buckingham Civic Ward.
