Chance to say goodbye to town’s old police station

BUCKINGHAM people will have a chance to say goodbye to their old police station at an open day this autumn.

Insp Emma Garside is planning to open up the Moreton Road venue to visitors at a community event once the police office has transferred into its purpose-built new premises on Buckingham Industrial Estate.

Work is under way to refit the new building to police specifications, and the move is expected to take place in September.

Prospective buyers are already being shown round the old Victorian, Grade II-listed police station, priced at £400,000 – strictly by appointment.

The detached property comes with a large, tree-lined garden, plenty of parking, two staircases and some very unusual features.

Downstairs are the original police cells, complete with locking doors with hatches and a massive, sliding iron gate.

Above are a warren of rooms on two floors, views across Buckingham and, possibly, a ghost.

Insp Garside said: “Some people who’ve worked here for years are adamant they’ve heard footsteps.”

She added: “I won’t be sorry to leave this building, although it’s very quaint and pretty and it’s steeped in history. But it’s just impractical for what we need.”

And she reassured people the front counter service at the Old Gaol will continue after the move. “For us it’s very important that we’re keeping five-day-a-week opening at the Old Gaol, she said.”
