Churches’ lifeline for families in crisis

A life line for families and individuals in crisis will be launched in Towcester next month.
With a continuing back drop of wide spread economic strife Churches Together in Towcester will launch the Towcester Food Bank in October.
Food Banks are designed to provide people suffering a personal, health or financial crisis, with enough food for themselves and their family for three days.
With the support of social housing provider, South Northants Homes, this week church volunteers began training sessions at Chantry House which were introduced by representative from the Trussell Trust which coordinates Food Banks nationally.
Barbara Parfitt, secretary for Churches Together, said people are often surprised to hear there is a need for a Food Bank in the affluent south Northants. But she said hard times can affect anyone, rich or poor and added: “We are all only just one crisis away from needing a food bank, it doesn’t matter where you live or what job you do, you never know when you might lose that job.
“You might suffer a relationship breakdown which sees the sole earner leave the household, it could even be a change in the day you get paid which leaves you without the means to feed yourself.
“There are many reasons why someone might be faced with the situation where that can not put food on the table and the food bank is designed to give those people a few days to make contact with other agencies which may be able to support them longer term.”
Access to the Food Bank which will be located in the flat attached to the Riverside Centre in Islington Road, is via referral from a health care professional or support worker
On Saturday, September 15, volunteers will be outside the Waitrose Store collecting food donations.
