A local artist has brought a dazzling splash of colour to Winslow’s Market Square, but not everybody is happy about her shopfront makeover.

Established artist and interior designer Paula Shepherd, who lives in Winslow, is well-known for her bright and colourful paintings.

And now she has turned the former Truly Scrumptious sweetshop into her latest work of art. Called Fancy T-hat, the shophas become a boutiqueshowcase for Ms Shepherd’s bepoke special-0ccasion hats, shoes and vintage wedding dresses, in addition to her paintings and murals, vintage jewellery, handmade cushions and lampshades.

Ms Shepherd said: “I have been an artist in the local area for a few years and I am really excited about the new shop and being able to display my work for people to see.

“It’s like a little boudoir. It’s all French and very baroque.

“It’s fashion linking in with lifestyle.”

Milliner Ms Shepherd also offers a bespoke service for weddings, and occasions such as Cheltenham and Ascot.

“People come in with their outfits and I design their hats, shoes and bags around their outfit,” she said.

But some people feel artistic licence has gone too far with Ms Shepherd’s reinterpretation of the shop’s facade in pink and turquoise.

Aylesbury Vale District Council spokesman Philip Dales said: “The property is listed and within the Winslow conservation area. We have been in touch with the shop tenant and owner following a complaint. In our professional opinion, the colour scheme affects the historic character of the listed building.”

Ms Shepherd has now made an application for listed building consent.
