Comedy and drama at community cinema club

The Anges' Share

The Anges' Share

Winslow Community Cinema launches its spring season on Friday, January 11, with a bittersweet British comedy from 2012, The Angels’ Share.

Formerly the Buckingham and Winslow Film Society, the club has been running since 1995.

It aims to allow local people to see high-quality films in a convivial atmosphere.

Movies are screened fortnightly in the Rose Room at the Winslow Centre. The varied programme mixes world cinema and timeless classics with interesting recent releases, some of which have not previously been shown locally.

Satisfying and understated comedy The Angels’ Share sees veteran social-realist director Ken Loach and his long-time screenwriting partner Paul Laverty on top form.

A rogues’ gallery of Glaswegian miscreants on a community payback scheme are taken on a trip to a distillery, where they concoct a get-rich-quick plan. The supporting cast are spot-on and first-time actor Paul Brannigan is an engaging lead as a young offender trapped in a cycle of poverty and violence, who is given one last chance to avoid jail due to his girlfriend’s pregnancy.

On Friday, January 26, 2012 film Shadow Dancer, is a sober and downbeat thriller from director James Marsh, set in London and Belfast in 1993.

On February 8, John Carney’s low-budget gem Once (2007) is a big-hearted modern-day musical love story set in the streets of Dublin.

On February 22, Iranian psychological drama About Elly (2009), won the Silver Bear Award at the 2010 Berlin Film Festival.

On March 8, The Fairy is a friendly lark from semi-absurdist comedians Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno Romy.

On March 22, Natalie Wood, Steve McQueen and Edie Adams star in the 1963 classic Love With The Proper Stranger.

On April 5, Wes Anderson’s charming and quirky Moonrise Kingdom set in 1965 New England tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love and run away together, turning the peaceful local community upside-down.
