Crowds turn out for Christmas light switch-ons in Buckingham and Brackley

Bad weather was no barrier to Christmas cheer at Christmas light switch ons in Buckingham and Brackley last weekend.

> Despite floods during the week and pouring rain on the night, nothing was going to stop the switching on of the new Christmas lights in Buckingham.

The new festive lights were installed at the start of last week and, after holdups due to the weather, the tree was finally dressed at midnight on Friday.

Despite attrocious rain, mayor of Buckingham Ruth Newell welcomed a good crowd of people to the event and an opening speech was given by Rev Richard Rugg, from St Peter and St Paul’s Church.

Actress and singer Holly Brewer, who is playing Wendy in the panto Peter Pan at Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre, assisted the mayor with the countdown for the lights switch-on and sang for the crowd.

Father Christmas, holding an umbrella, waved to the children from the Santa float, and MK Dons mascots Donnie and Mooie also braved the weather to mingle with the crowd.

Unfortunately, the rain was too heavy for the Winslow Concert Band to play. A town council spokesman said: “Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and came out to support the event.”

> The ‘true British spirit’ was on display in Brackley last weekend during the damp Christmas lights switch on as organisers and families carried on regardless.

The upper town hall was filled to capacity after rain forced the festivities off the piazza.

Organiser, councillor Fiona Baker or Brackley Town Council said: “I called it true British spirit, don’t give up, just keep going.”

After performances by the Starlight Dance Academy and the Brackley branch of the Oxford Sport and Traditional Martial Arts group the action returned to the piazza as pantomime cast members from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs arrived from Northampton’s Decco theatre to lead the count down and switch on the lights.

The council has acquired solar power Christmas tree lights, which are being trailed this year, but they hope to find a sponsor in order to replace the main lights for next year. Contact the town council on 01280 702441
